Just Monarch It

I remember it like it was just yesterday. It was February 2005, and I was in a conference room in a hotel in Las Vegas, giving an hour long introductory Monarch presentation to a room of some twenty accountants and controllers. I started my talk with the words “I love Monarch”. That’s when the whole thing went off the rails.

A very nice lady seated right in the middle of everyone began to laugh loudly. She immediately apologized, and followed up with “I’m so glad that you said that! I thought that I was the only one that thought like that!’

Over the next ten minutes, she did not only my introduction, but covered most of what I had intended to discuss, allowing me to interject into my own presentation from time to time. It was great fun, and everyone seemed to enjoy the interaction as many of audience hadn’t met me previously, but did know her. It seemed that her obvious passion for the product was giving me – the unknown guy – a fair bit of instant credibility with them.

It was during her comments that I first heard someone aside from myself use the term “Monarch it”. She was referring to how her coworkers asked how she generated tabular data from the ERP system report so quickly, and she said that she told them that she “will just download a report and Monarch it”.

Subsequently, I’ve heard the Monarch name used as a verb at each Datawatch User Conference that I’ve attended.

So when you hear someone say that they’ll “Monarch it”, know that you’ve encountered someone who is not only likely quite skilled with Monarch, but is bound to be pretty passionate about it too. Listen carefully and without even seeing their work, you’ll know that they excel with Monarch.

I know the problem well, although I think I would have problems if I declared my passion for Monarch to the wider office.

To many I am the chap that raves on about a bit of software that they may have seen but not understood, and they probably do not realise just how much they use the output from it. If I say “I’ll just Monarch it” they all know to stand back and wait the few minutes it takes to get the desired result.

Monarch is the mistress you can have without getting into trouble.

Now that’s what I call having a passion for the product!

But mistress?? Even I can’t go THAT far. Is that a British thing? :-)
